Javett-UP Book Club Discussion
The Javett-UP Book Club, is in partnership with the GALA and the UP Centre for Sexualities, Aids and Gender is hosting its first digital event on 5 June 2020. It will unpack and discuss gender and especially queerness and queer identity, and social commentary in art and elsewhere about LGBTIQ persons and communities.
At the core of the conversation will be the book Meanwhile … Graphic Short Stories About Everyday Queer life in Southern and East Africa (Qintu Collab).
Joining the two permanent exhibitions at Javett-UP (All in a Day’s Eye and the Gold of Africa collections) is the 101 Collecting Conversations: Signature Works of a Century exhibition of seminal works of the last 100 years by South African artists. This exhibition features a number of works by gay artists. These include Athi-Patra Ruga’s The Knight of the Long Knives; Steven Cohen’s Chandelier; Zanele Muholi’s Simthembile I, East London; and Nicholas Hlobo’s Igqirha Lendlela.
Collectively, these works (and especially in the context of the wider exhibition) address language and the body, tolerance and discomfort, sexuality and transformation, integration and marginalisation, and identity. They give much to talk about, and think of.
101 Collecting Conversations: Signature Works of a Century must close on 28 June. We hope to open the doors of the art centre as soon as possible, and certainly before the exhibition closes. However, lockdown rules may prevent this. In the meantime, enjoy the works by following Javett-UP on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.
The digital book club event on 5 June promises to be enthralling. It’s one you most certainly do not want to miss.
