Accomplished in the medium of acrylic paint, Starcke drew on history as a source for many of his works, in particular for his 2004 exhibition The Muse of History, held in Cape Town.
Here the artist used a photo-realist technique to offer a scathing critique of the Dutch colonial period in South Africa. This stance is present in Legend. Here the image is of a piece of Dutch colonial furniture that burns, but also gives birth to a bright and delicate flower.
