Man with a Snake

Ragmana was born in 1962 in Chandama, Limpopo. He started sculpting at age 15 in 1977 under the guiding hand of artist Simon Mikosi. Ragmana receives his ideas as visions and creates work as a narrative inspired from local lore, biblical teachings, as well as foreign mythologies. 


A sculpture of a male figure holding a snake. In Tshivenḓa culture the snake is a symbol for jealousy. The man is talking to the snake, alluding to jealousy taking over his life and leading his actions.
