This relatively late painting demonstrates the shift in Bradshaw’s output to bold, rich, expressionist landscape painting.
The choice of place is also significant: while for a long time he was inspired by the expansive horizons and colour palette of the Eastern Cape, this Namib desert scene, with its distinctive burnt orange and ochre palette, was a favourite of landscape painters ranging from Pierneef to Keith Alexander.
The abstraction of detail in the view and its seemingly unbalanced proportions also exemplify Bradshaw’s later output.
