This Untitled abstract work is representative of Ainslie’s move, in the last decade of his life, into abstraction. He formed a relationship with the South African abstract painter Douglas Portway, and would, through this period, look for a means of expression that went beyond the figurative, but remained identifiably African.
This led him to explore the possibilities of colour-field and abstract traditions from Africa, Europe and the US. This work is situated in that period of his career.
