The photograph shows the iconic central core of the Ponte tower. This architectural element, sometimes praised and sometimes maligned, has been the subject of several art projects by different artists over the last two decades.
In this image, it is pictured from the top as a plunging abyss surrounded by the windows of the hallways that encircle it in the building. Ponte has come to represent the immense changes that the inner city of Johannesburg has seen since 1994, particularly in relation to immigration and urban decline and renewal.
