Mabaso was recognised as an expert colourist and many have commented on the relationship between his weaving and his painting. This ‘cross-pollination’ is particularly evident in this exuberant abstract work.
Its ragged and spontaneous streaks of bright colour run from top to bottom across the whole length of the work, bringing to mind the loops and strands of fibre that would hang from a loom during the weaving of a large cloth or rug.
