This work comes from a group of sculptures collectively titled Voyages in 1989, which followed a landmark exhibition called Procession, at the Goodman Gallery in 1985.
These works all took the idea of the sea as the central theme, but in keeping with Brown’s rollicking satirical approach, the voyages are all on the mythical Ship of Fools. They also reference the slave ships and vessels of the colonial explorers. His ships, while peopled with sailors and human cargo, are broken hulks, unfit to take to sea.
