The catalogue for our ground-breaking 101 Collecting Conversations: Signature Works of a Century exhibition is now on sale.
The book documents Javett-UP's inaugural exhibition in which 42 public and private institutions across South Africa have collaborated with us to showcase exceptional works in their collections. The book provides an overview of a century of South African art (1920 - 2020) collected.
The Javett-UP brought together examples of artworks drawn from collections across the country and further afield. Over 300 artworks were nominated as being of particular significance for the exhibition, of which 101 were selected for final display. We looked for works of historical importance – in that they played a formative role in an artistic movement, context or era. We also selected works which demonstrated a unique art style and/or technical skill. We wanted evocative works, which would transcend their own time and context and resonate with contemporary audiences.
Themes in this exhibition, and hence in the catalogue, include politics, religious, cultural and traditional values, urbanisation, landscape and identity.
We believe this catalogue is a must-have for art lovers and art collectors in South Africa. As a limited edition of only 1200 copies were printed, the catalogue itself will soon become a sought-after art historical record!
